Buying Groceries

We were happy to find two grocery stores, one of which is an easy walk from the church building and the other is within walking distance of our apartment.
Casino is the largest and the one close to the church building. It has many familiar products, including cereal, oatmeal, cookies, Coke, Fanta orange, Sprite, canned vegetables, etc. This is the main place that we shop, although the stores hours of operation make it a little hard. It closes from 1:00-3:00 for lunch. That is also our lunch time and the easiest time for us to shop. (Most business and schools close for lunch, and everyone goes home to eat and nap.)

Next is Pridoux, the smaller store that is in the area of the apartment. This is where we can go on Saturday or Sunday afternoon. During the week we get home too late to go there. The man sitting outside works as a guard.
Next is the tiny store that is across the street from the church. It only has a counter and a small selection of items behind the counter. This is where I was one day when a lady ahead of me bought one egg and about 1/4 cup of cooking oil. She had brought in an old bottle in which to put the oil. The only thing we have bought here are a few bottles of Coke or Sprite.
In the mornings we see many people coming to this tiny store to buy long loaves of French bread. We could not figure out where the bread was made or how the little store got so much of it----until one morning we saw this delivery cart.....


Can you tell that the bread is not wrapped in any way? And the man is not wearing gloves? The man took bread inside the store with his bare hands. He left the lid to the cart open while he was inside the store---I think the flies really enjoyed a feast! One other day we saw a cart like this delivering to another store. On his way into the store, the delivery man dropped two loaves of bread in the sand. He just picked it up and put it back in his stack to take into the store! Needless to say, we are not buying that bread!
