At first, when we saw so many people with sticks in their mouths, we did not know what the sticks were. Then we found out that they are toothbrushes. I guess that in a very poor country where people cannot afford real toothbrushes or toothpaste, this is a good alternative! Many of the Senegalese people had very white and pretty teeth. It was common to see the educated and middle income people using the sticks as well as the poor. The sticks are sold for a very cheap price. They are made of different kinds of wood, so one can purchase his preferred flavor!
Next is a photo of a bundle of sticks for sale in the market place. We bought some to try; we were not really impressed with the flavor or the little splinters that came off in our mouths.
