First Party

We hosted several parties in order for the readers to get to know some of our new friends at the church. Our first party was a "Bug Party"! It was well attended by readers and by church members, and the people seemed to have a good time. We had an icebreaker activity and then played a game with dice where the people had to roll a certain number to add a part to their "bug". The team at each table who completed their bug drawing first advanced to the next table. There was a lot of friendly competition! Prizes were given, including the much-sought after plastic bugs! Afterwards we had refreshments.

The first photo shows the party decorations in the auditorium at the church building. We were limited on what we could take for decorations due to luggage space on the trip to Africa. The guests enjoyed looking at the cut-out pictures of bugs and talking about the names in English.

Next is Jan at the registration table. Each guest signed in and got a name tag.

We had to keep the costs of party refreshments to a minimum. We purchased cookies and pretzels at the local Casino grocery store. The cookies were a big hit, but the pretzels were eaten only after the cookies were gone! Drinks were Sprite, orange Fanta, and a grape drink. The grape drink was the most popular, probably because it was the most expensive and people don't purchase it often. We found out quickly that the cookies need to be handed directly to the people, because even the adults grabbed big handfuls! In such a poor country cookies are a real treat!

The games were enjoyed by people of all ages and English ability. That was one of our goals, along with the goals of having the people interact with each other and have fun together.
