The dorms are built in square shapes with open center areas. The next photo shows a dorm mother cooking fish in one of the courtyards for the evening meal. She had cut each small fish in half and was frying the pieces.
But the toilets do not look quite like American ones. They are just holes in the floor!
Each dorm is divided into small rooms. The rooms have walls on three sides and are open to the hallway. This room has bunk beds.
Some dorm rooms had no bunk beds, just mattresses on the floor. With four mattresses, the rooms had no walk-space. Each girl had her belongings in a suitcase or bag, which was beside one wall.
Some of the girls in the following pictures were our readers.
The girls were really happy that we came to see their rooms, and they all wanted to pose for photos!
We did not go inside a boys' dorm, but these boys were outside their dorm. They are playing a game much like checkers. They spent hours playing this game. Some of these boys were also reading with us.
The game board is homemade out of cardboard, and the "men" are bottle caps. The boys all wanted to raid the trashcans after our parties so that they could get a supply of bottle caps! They thought they had really hit the jackpot with about 60 bottle caps per party! One of the boys that Debbie E. read with made her a game board to bring home! To him that was a great gift---and it was to Debbie, too, because he had put so much effort into making it especially for her!
