Many years ago the UK government began a program of garden allotments for families that live in apartments and who have no yards. (We also saw this in Germany.) A family can pay a small fee every year to rent a parcel of government land for a family garden. The gardens are small, about 20 feet square, and there will be quite a few together in one place. The garden area in Martock has about 30 or so individual gardens. All kinds of different vegetables and fruits are grown, as well as a few flowers. Many of the little plots contain small storage buildings for tools, etc. A few have small green houses. Most are well-maintained, while others are either bare or grown up with weeds. Someone told me that many of the plots stay in a family for years.

Notice the methods of collecting rain water. This type of blue can is very common for water collection at private homes, too.
